Description
Hemerocallis Red Hot Returns is a clump-forming, semi-evergreen perennial about 28 inches tall and 20 to 39 inches wide. Arching strap-shaped green leaves form fans beneath branched scapes. Large single red flowers, about 5 inches across, have a yellow halo and green throat.
Grow it in full sun or partial shade in fertile, moist but well-drained chalk, clay, loam, or sand. Full sun supports the strongest flowering, while deep watering during dry spring and early-summer periods helps maintain bloom and foliage. Flowers begin in June, continue through August, and may rebloom into fall.
Space plants about 18 inches apart. Remove spent flowers and seedpods, then cut finished scapes near ground level. Divide established clumps in early spring or early fall. Monitor for aphids, slugs, snails, gall midge, spider mites, thrips, leaf spot, rust, and bacterial rot. The flowers are edible to people, but the plant is toxic to cats.
