Description
Caragana arborescens Pendula creates a compact, strongly weeping focal point about 3 to 5 feet high and wide. Stiffly pendulous branches carry light green pinnate leaves and fragrant yellow pea-like flowers from late May into early June. Small spines may injure skin.
Plant in full sun and well-drained soil; some light shade is tolerated. It accepts acid, neutral, or alkaline soil and handles drought and infertile ground once established. Water regularly during establishment, then reduce frequency as roots settle.
This cultivar is often top-grafted into a small standard. Use it as an architectural accent in a courtyard, small bed, or patio container. Its seeds are listed as poisonous by an Alberta government guide and may cause vomiting or diarrhea. Check local rules because regulatory treatment of Caragana cultivars varies by jurisdiction.
