Description
Golden Spirit smoketree brings a long season of luminous foliage to sunny borders. Its almost circular leaves open bronze-chartreuse, become golden yellow through summer, and finish in coral, orange, red, and pink tones before falling. An upright, open-branched outline gives the shrub enough structure for a specimen position, informal screen, or colorful hedge.
Plant it in full sun or partial shade in fertile soil that drains well. Full sun produces the strongest leaf color, while reliable moisture helps prevent scorch during very dry weather. It accepts chalk, clay, loam, or sand and a wide pH range where water does not linger around the roots.
Remove dead or damaged growth in late winter or early spring. Harder cutting at that time can keep the shrub compact and encourage larger leaves, although it reduces flowering. Wear gloves when pruning because the sap may irritate sensitive skin.
