Description
Rosa rugosa forms a dense, upright-to-arching shrub with heavily wrinkled green foliage, abundant prickly stems, and fragrant single flowers in pink to purple tones. Large orange-red edible hips follow from late summer, persist into winter, and attract birds.
Grow it in full sun and moist but well-drained soil, allowing generous space for its suckering habit. It tolerates drought, poor soil, road salt, ocean spray, and wind, but dislikes extremely wet ground. The species can spread aggressively and is invasive or restricted in some regions, so check local guidance and remove unwanted suckers. Wear gloves around the dense prickles.
