Description

Cream-edged green leaves line the arching stems of Polygonatum odoratum Variegatum, creating a bright, layered outline in shaded beds. Dark maroon young stems carry small cream bells with green tips beneath the foliage in late spring and early summer. The flowers have a light fragrance.

The clump spreads slowly by shallow rhizomes, making it useful for woodland gardens, informal borders, and naturalized shade planting. Its stems also work for cutting. Blue-black berries may follow in fall, while the leaves turn yellow to brown before dying back.

Grow it in fertile, humus-rich soil that stays moist but drains well. Full shade and partial shade suit it, while full sun is also tolerated. Divide established clumps in spring and protect the brittle new shoots. Cut old stems to the base in late fall.

The stems, leaves, and berries are harmful if eaten, and the plant is toxic to dogs. Keep it away from dogs that chew plants.
