Description
Heuchera ‘Obsidian’ forms a compact, rounded mound of remarkably dark foliage. The shallowly lobed leaves open reddish black in spring and deepen toward near-black in summer, while airy clusters of tiny white-to-cream flowers rise on dark reddish stems from late spring through summer.
Grow it in full sun or partial shade in fertile, neutral, moist but well-drained loam or sandy soil. Dark leaf color can intensify with sun, but avoid prolonged drought and waterlogged ground. Keep the crown at or slightly above soil level, mulch annually, and space plants about 35 centimeters apart.
Use this polished dark-leaved perennial for edging, groundcover, containers, or underplanting where it can contrast with gold grasses and fresh green foliage. Remove dead leaves and spent flowers, and divide the clump every few years to keep the crown healthy.
