Description

Arching sprays of pink-and-white heart-shaped flowers make Lamprocapnos spectabilis a distinctive spring feature for shaded borders. Its loose, mounded clumps carry divided green foliage and settle naturally among woodland and cottage-garden planting.

Grow it in partial or full shade in humus-rich soil that stays moist but drains well. The foliage may yellow and disappear after flowering, so nearby shade perennials can cover the space later in the season. The flowers attract butterflies and hummingbirds and can also be cut for arrangements.

All parts contain toxic compounds and should not be eaten, and repeated contact with the foliage may irritate skin. Wear gloves when handling the plant.
