Description
Compact spires in blue, purple, pink, and cream make Delphinium elatum Mini Stars a vivid choice for the front or middle of a sunny border. The bushy clumps reach about 2 feet tall and carry strong stems, so they bring upright color to smaller gardens and containers without the staking usually associated with taller delphiniums.
Plant it in fertile, moist but well-drained soil in full sun or partial shade. A spring application of compost and fertilizer supports its heavy flowering. Remove spent stalks after the first display to encourage another flush in late summer or early fall. The mixed flowers attract bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds and also make useful cut stems.
All parts are toxic if eaten, so keep garden debris away from people, pets, and grazing animals. Good drainage and air movement help limit crown rot, leaf spots, and powdery mildew.
