Description

Fragrant pink-to-purple flower clusters make Asclepias incarnata a strong summer feature for moist borders, rain gardens, pond margins, and streamside plantings. Upright clumps reach about 3 to 5 feet tall and 2 to 3 feet wide, with narrow green leaves along thick green stems.

The flowers supply nectar to many pollinators, while the leaves feed monarch butterfly caterpillars. Full sun to partial shade and moist clay or loam suit the plant; temporary flooding is tolerated, but dry conditions can damage growth.

All parts contain toxic compounds, and the milky sap can irritate skin and eyes; wear gloves when handling cut stems.
