Description

Panicum virgatum Rotstrahlbusch rises in dense upright clumps, then colors from green through flame red while airy pink-to-reddish panicles hover above the foliage.

At about 3 to 5 feet tall and 2 to 3 feet wide, it brings strong fall color and persistent winter structure to sunny borders, prairie drifts, rain gardens, and containers. Full sun and well-drained soil support the strongest form; excess shade, moisture, or fertility can make stems flop. Leave the dry stems standing through winter, then cut the clump to ground level before spring growth starts.
