Description
Malus baccata Dolgo forms a broad deciduous tree with an upright, rounded, spreading crown. Green foliage turns yellow, red, and orange in autumn.
Shell-pink buds open into fragrant single white flowers in spring, providing useful pollen for other apples and forage for visiting insects. A different compatible apple nearby improves fruit set.
Bright red crabapples ripen from July into September, depending on climate. Their firm creamy white flesh tastes tart and suits jelly, cider, preserves, applesauce, and baking. The cooked fruit is edible, but the seeds contain toxins and should be removed before use.
