Description
Eastern redbud is a small, rounded, often multi-stemmed tree that typically reaches about 6 to 9 m tall and 7.5 to 10.5 m wide. Clusters of rose-pink to purplish pea-shaped flowers line the bare branches in early spring before the heart-shaped leaves open. The leaves mature to dark green and usually turn clear yellow or yellow-green in fall, while flat brown seedpods may remain into winter.
Grow it in moist but well-drained, moderately fertile soil in full sun or partial shade. Partial shade is especially useful in hot, dry climates, while brighter light generally supports a stronger flower and fruit display. Choose the permanent site carefully because established redbuds dislike root disturbance, shelter the crown from drying winds, and water consistently until the tree is established.
