Description
Vision in Red Chinese astilbe forms a clump of divided dark green leaves, with thick, branched flower plumes carried above the foliage on dark purple stems. Its small, fragrant flowers create a dark purplish-red display in June and July. Plant it in groups along a shaded border, in a woodland garden, or beside a pond or stream where the soil stays moist. It prefers rich, humusy, well-drained soil in partial to full shade; keep the soil consistently moist, especially as the foliage and plumes develop. A summer compost mulch helps retain moisture. The flower stalks can remain for dried seed-head interest, or be trimmed after bloom for a tidier appearance. Divide crowded clumps every three to four years.
