Description
Glossy scalloped leaves make Ajuga reptans Black Scallop a dramatic ground cover for shaded, flat garden beds. The near-black purple foliage forms a dense evergreen carpet that can spread 1.5 to 3 feet wide. Blue flower spikes rise above the mat in spring and early summer, bringing seasonal color and pollinator activity.
Partial or full shade protects the dark leaves, and gentle light helps maintain their rich tone. Keep the soil evenly moist without leaving the crown waterlogged. No routine pruning is needed, although worn foliage can be trimmed after flowering in late spring. Divide rooted sections in spring or early fall. Slugs, snails, and powdery mildew may appear when dense growth remains wet or crowded.
