Description
Ajuga reptans ‘Valfredda’, often sold as Chocolate Chip bugleweed, is a low-growing perennial with a dense, spreading habit. Its narrow leaves are green with rich brown and purple tones, giving color through much of the year. In spring and early summer, short spikes of blue flowers rise above the foliage and add bright contrast. This compact plant works well where a tidy ground cover is needed.
It is a good choice for edging, rock gardens, containers, and planting between paving stones. It also suits shady areas and can handle a range of light conditions, making it easy to place in many gardens. The foliage stays attractive with light care, and the plant slowly forms a neat mat over time. This makes it useful for filling small gaps and softening the front of a border.
Care is simple. Old flower stems can be removed after blooming to keep the plant looking tidy, and crowded patches can be thinned or lightly trimmed to refresh growth. New plants are easy to produce by dividing rooted runners. It is mostly easy to grow, though wet soil can lead to crown rot, and poor air flow may bring powdery mildew. Slugs or aphids may appear once in a while.

| Pests | This plant is usually trouble-free, but slugs and aphids may appear, especially in damp spots. Good air flow and avoiding very wet conditions help keep problems down. |
| Diseases | Crown rot can be a problem in heavy or poorly drained soil, especially where moisture sits around the plant. Powdery mildew may also appear from time to time if air flow is poor. |
