Description
Small glossy leaves give Parthenocissus tricuspidata ‘Veitchii’ a closely textured surface as they open purple, mature to green, and turn dark red-purple in fall. Inconspicuous summer flowers are followed by blue-black berries that attract birds.
This vigorous deciduous climber spreads across walls with adhesive-tipped tendrils, ultimately reaching 26 to 39 feet tall and 13 to 26 feet wide. It grows in sun or partial shade and prefers fertile, moist but well-drained clay, loam, or sandy soil.
Plant away from the wall base, enrich the soil with compost, and water until established. Provide wires where extra security is needed, tie in stray shoots, and cut back growth nearing windows, gutters, or roofs in fall or early winter.
