Description
Campsis radicans quickly covers a sturdy arbor, pergola, or freestanding trellis with dense deciduous foliage and clusters of orange-red trumpet flowers. The summer blooms provide abundant nectar for hummingbirds, and the vine continues flowering into early fall.
Plant it in full sun for the strongest bloom, in moist but well-drained soil with enough space for its spreading growth. Aerial rootlets cling firmly, so a substantial support set away from vulnerable siding or masonry is the safest garden placement.
Regular pruning and prompt sucker removal keep the vigorous vine within bounds. Water during establishment and dry spells. Leaves and flowers are toxic if eaten, and the sap may irritate skin; gloves are sensible during pruning.
