Description
Amelanchier canadensis is a large, upright, suckering shrub valued for several seasons of interest. Drooping racemes of slightly fragrant white flowers open in spring before or with the leaves, followed by small edible pomes that ripen from green through red to dark purple-black in early summer.
The finely serrated green leaves turn yellow, orange, and red in fall. Multi-stemmed growth suits a woodland edge, rain garden, informal hedge, or wildlife planting, where the early flowers serve pollinators and the fruit feeds songbirds.
