Description
Quercus rubra grows into a broad, rounded shade tree with dark green summer leaves that turn red to reddish brown in fall. It reaches about 50 to 70 feet tall and 50 to 75 feet wide, so it needs generous room.
Plant it in full sun or partial shade in moist, well-drained acid to neutral soil. Its acorns feed birds and small mammals and are edible only after tannins are thoroughly leached or boiled out. Raw acorns and leaves contain toxic compounds and should not be eaten; keep fallen acorns away from dogs and grazing animals.
