Description

Nyssa sylvatica Wildfire is a slow-growing, long-lived shade tree selected for red new growth that repeats through the growing season. Glossy, alternate leaves mature deep green, then shift through yellow and orange to bright red and purplish red in autumn. A strong central framework develops into a broad pyramidal to oval crown, while mature bark becomes dark and deeply furrowed.

Give it a generous, permanent position in full sun or partial shade. Reliably moist, fertile, acidic to neutral soil supports the best growth, though established trees adapt to several soil textures. Shelter the site from strong winds and avoid unnecessary transplanting. Its male, seedless character keeps the design focused on canopy, shade and exceptional seasonal foliage rather than fruit.
