Description
Golden new leaves make Gleditsia triacanthos f. inermis ‘Sunburst’ stand out in spring, then soften to yellow-green and bright green through summer before turning yellow in fall. The rounded, open crown filters sunlight instead of casting dense shade, leaving room for planting beneath it.
This deciduous tree performs best in full sun and moist but well-drained or well-drained soil. It accepts chalk, clay, loam, or sand and tolerates dry conditions and road salt after establishment. Water regularly while the root system settles, then prune damaged or crossing branches in late autumn or winter.
Thornless, seedless growth makes the tree easier to place near patios and paths. Small, fragrant cream-yellow flowers appear in racemes in early summer and provide nectar for bees. Watch for gall midge, webworms, leafhoppers, spider mites, canker, and root rot.
