Description
Fagus sylvatica Purple Fountain brings a tall, narrow silhouette to the landscape, combining a strong upright leader with branches that sweep downward like a fountain. Leaves emerge red-bronze, deepen to burgundy-purple in summer, then turn golden-copper before falling, while smooth silver-gray bark and the draped framework keep the tree distinctive in winter.
This deciduous tree is especially useful where a full-size beech would spread too broadly. Give it a prominent position in a smaller garden or courtyard, where its vertical form can work as a specimen, architectural accent, or privacy screen. Its dense foliage offers cover for birds, and beechnuts provide wildlife food.
Plant in full sun for the strongest foliage color, though partial shade is accepted. Moist but well-drained soil is ideal, and chalk, clay, loam, or sand can work when drainage is reliable. Water deeply and regularly through the first few growing seasons, then reduce the frequency while continuing to water thoroughly. Fertilize before new growth begins in spring.
Raw or unripe beechnuts are toxic when eaten in large quantities; keep them away from children and dogs. Watch for aphids and beech scale, along with beech bark disease, bracket fungi, powdery mildew, and honey fungus.
