Description

Celtis occidentalis grows into a broad native shade tree with arching branches and distinctive corky gray-brown bark. Green leaves turn yellow in autumn, while small drupes ripen from red to purple and often remain into winter for birds.

The ripe fruit has sweet, date-like flesh around a hard seed and can be eaten without cooking. The tree works in spacious lawns, urban landscapes, wildlife gardens, and pollinator plantings, where it tolerates heat, drought, wind, varied soils, and brief flooding.

Grow it in full sun or partial shade and give it moist, well-drained soil while roots establish. Apply organic mulch over the root zone while keeping it away from the trunk. Use fertilizer only when a soil test identifies a nutrient need, then water it in.
