Description
Viburnum plicatum Mariesii is the clean current name for the deciduous doublefile viburnum historically sold under tomentosum forms. It develops broad horizontal tiers lined in April and May with flat white cymes whose tiny fertile centers are surrounded by larger sterile florets. Deeply veined ovate green leaves turn red-purple in autumn.
Grow it in full sun or partial shade in moist but well-drained, humus-rich soil. Space plants about 415 centimeters apart and prune immediately after flowering only if needed. RHS states that the ornamental fruits are not to be eaten by people or pets and recommends gloves; exact dog-, cat-, and horse-specific outcomes are not established.
