Description

Bright yellow summer foliage makes Rhus typhina Bailtiger a bold focal shrub for sunny borders, mass plantings, or a roomy patio container. Its deeply cut, lanceolate leaflets drape from rosy-pink leaf stems on upward-angled branches, forming a compact rounded plant about 6 feet tall and wide.

In fall, the leaves shift to yellow, orange, and scarlet. Greenish-yellow summer flowers may be followed on female plants by red fruit clusters that can persist into winter. Give the shrub full sun and moist but well-drained soil; established plants tolerate drought and a wide range of soils.

Remove unwanted suckers and damaged wood in late winter or early spring. The sap may irritate sensitive skin, so wear gloves when pruning.
