Description
Cotinus coggygria Royal Purple is a broad deciduous shrub with rounded leaves that emerge maroon-red, deepen to purple-red or near-black in summer, and become redder in autumn.
Tiny yellow spring flowers develop into large airy pink to purplish-pink plumes that create the plant’s characteristic smoke-like summer display. Mature plants can reach 4 to 8 metres high and wide.
Grow it in full sun for the strongest foliage colour, using well-drained soil and medium moisture. Established shrubs tolerate drought and deer. Prune lightly for flowers or cut back hard for larger foliage, and wear gloves because the resinous sap may irritate skin.
