Description
Euonymus alatus forms a broad, bushy deciduous shrub about 1.5 to 2.5 m tall and wide. Its oval green leaves turn vivid rosy crimson in autumn, when pink to purplish-red capsules split to reveal orange seeds. Corky ridges along the branchlets give the plant useful winter character after leaf fall.
Grow it in full sun or partial shade in moist but well-drained soil. It accepts clay, loam, chalk, or sand and acidic, neutral, or alkaline conditions. Allow room for its spreading outline, water regularly while it establishes, and prune only when necessary. All parts are harmful if eaten by people or pets, so site it thoughtfully and wear gloves when handling.
