Description
Deep crimson-red cups with bright golden anthers cover the bare spring branches of Chaenomeles superba Crimson and Gold before glossy green leaves appear. Its broad, spreading growth can cover ground, form a low hedge, or train against a wall.
Aromatic fruit ripens from green to yellow and can be cooked into jams and jellies after the seeds are removed. The seeds contain toxins, pets should not eat the ornamental fruit, and the spiny branches can scratch or puncture skin. Grow it in full sun or partial shade with well-drained soil, then prune side shoots after flowering.
