Description

Buddleja davidii Royal Red is an accepted deciduous butterfly bush cultivar growing about 8 to 13 feet tall and wide. Arching branches carry opposite lance-shaped gray-green leaves with whitish undersides. Long fragrant panicles of rich purple-red flowers open from June through September and may continue until frost.

Grow it in full sun or partial shade in fertile soil that stays moist but well drained. It suits flowering borders, wildlife-friendly gardens, and cutting. Prune hard in late winter or early spring and remove spent flowers before seed forms. Washington quarantines nonapproved Buddleja davidii cultivars, and Oregon allows only listed approved seedless cultivars; Royal Red is not listed, so check state and local rules before planting.
