Description
Veronicastrum virginicum Fascination is an upright herbaceous perennial with strong stems surrounded by whorls of lance-shaped, toothed green leaves. Dense, slender racemes of tiny flowers branch near the stem tips and create a distinctive candelabra-like outline.
Deep pink buds open from the top downward into light violet-blue to lavender flowers, giving the summer display a subtle two-tone effect. The nectar- and pollen-rich flowers attract bees, butterflies, and other pollinating insects and can also be cut for arrangements.
Grow it in full sun or partial shade in moderately fertile, humus-rich soil that remains moist but drains well. Plants grown in too much shade may need support, and the soil should not be allowed to dry out.
Remove fading flower spikes, or cut the plant back to basal growth after flowering to encourage fresh foliage and a possible later bloom. Divide established clumps in spring. Watch for aphids, downy mildew, powdery mildew, and leaf spot.
