Description
Late-summer and autumn color rises above sunny borders when Symphyotrichum novae-angliae opens many purple daisy-like heads with yellow centers. The upright clumps reach about 91 to 183 cm tall and attract bees, butterflies, and migrating monarchs.
Use this eastern North American perennial in pollinator gardens, rain gardens, naturalized areas, wildflower meadows, or toward the back of a flowering border. The flowers are suitable for cutting, while seeds provide food for songbirds and small mammals.
Grow it in full sun in moist, fertile, well-drained soil. Pinch stems in spring for bushier growth, allow good airflow around the clump, and stake taller stems where necessary.
