Description

Solidago canadensis, or Canada goldenrod, is a long-lived North American perennial that spreads by rhizomes into broad colonies. Upright green to reddish stems carry alternate toothed lance-shaped leaves and end in wide, arching panicles packed with tiny yellow flower heads from late summer into autumn.

Grow it in full sun in moist but well-drained clay or loam. The late flowers provide pollen and nectar for bees, butterflies, and other insects, making the species useful in meadows, naturalized areas, rain gardens, and pollinator plantings. Allow ample room, or contain the rhizomes and remove seed heads before ripening where spread must be controlled.
