Description

Red buds cap the light violet flower spikes of Primula vialii, creating a clear two-tone display in midsummer. Upright stems rise from pale green leaf rosettes, bringing vertical color to moist, partly shaded borders, rock gardens, and waterside plantings.

Plant it in humus-rich loam that stays consistently moist but drains well, with shelter from drying conditions. Sun is suitable only where the soil remains moist. Divide clumps in early spring or grow new plants from seed. Cut back the spent spikes after flowering. The plant can be toxic to pets and horses; keep plant material out of their reach.
