Description
Phlox Violet Pinwheels creates a low, spreading mound of fine creeping stems and soft, needle-like dark-green foliage. In spring, the plant becomes covered with vivid purple flowers that mature toward violet, each with a light-violet eye, paired violet markings near the throat and subtly notched, inward-turned petals. The main display lasts four to six weeks, with occasional lighter bloom later in the growing season. Its restrained groundcover habit suits sunny border fronts, rock gardens, slopes, spaces between pavers and low masses beside walls. Plant it in well-drained neutral to alkaline soil, provide steady moisture while it establishes and avoid persistently wet conditions. Once established, it tolerates dry periods and deicing salt. Regular pruning is unnecessary, though a light shear after flowering can refresh the foliage and encourage a denser mat.
