Description

Osmundastrum cinnamomeum, the cinnamon fern, forms a substantial vase-shaped clump from compact horizontal rhizomes. Erect, bipinnate yellow- to blue-green sterile fronds surround separate, stiff fertile fronds that turn a distinctive cinnamon brown as their sporangia mature in spring.

Grow in partial to full shade in moist, humus-rich, acidic soil. It adapts to medium or boggy ground and suits woodland, rain, streamside, and pond-margin gardens. Established plants are slow to settle but vigorous and long-lived; consistent moisture produces the largest fronds, while dry soil can trigger dormancy.

Diseases

Generally disease-free; crown or rhizome rot can occur if stagnant water and poor aeration persist.

Pruning
