Description
Athyrium Niponicum Var Pictum Metallicum is a slowly spreading deciduous Japanese painted fern, normalized from its Metallicum trade name under the accepted Athyrium species.
Compact branching rhizomes form an arching clump of lance-shaped bipinnate fronds, colored silver-gray and green around contrasting burgundy-red rachises.
The fern is non-flowering; its strongest metallic silver display develops in spring and light shade, with fronds becoming greener during warm summer weather.
Across the direct outdoor range of USDA zones 4-9, grow it in sheltered full to partial shade and humus-rich soil kept moist but well drained.
