Description
Athyrium filix-femina forms graceful clumps of fresh-green, finely divided fronds that unfurl from central crowns in spring. Its lacy, arching foliage brings soft texture to shaded borders, woodland gardens, and underplanting.
Grow it in full or partial shade in fertile, humus-rich, neutral-to-acid soil that stays moist but drains well. Mulch with leaf mold or composted bark, keep the crown uncovered, and divide established plants in spring when more are wanted.
