Description
Astilbe Happy Spirit is a clump-forming deciduous perennial reaching about 45–60 cm high and 35–60 cm wide, with a typical flower height near 50–55 cm and foliage around 30 cm. Dark red to red-purple stems rise above dense mounds of divided, fern-like, dark-green leaves with toothed leaflets. From July through September the stems carry long, upright, branching, feathery panicles packed with small creamy-white to pure-white flowers. Grow in humus-rich, evenly moist clay or loam in partial to full shade. It tolerates boggy conditions but not drought, and hot sun can scorch foliage. Faded plumes may remain for attractive brown winter structure.
