Description
Artemisia schmidtiana Nana is a compact, semi-evergreen perennial that forms dense spreading cushions about 10 to 30 cm high and 30 to 60 cm wide. Its soft aromatic leaves are repeatedly divided into narrow hairlike lobes and covered with fine hairs, creating a silver-gray surface with subtle green undertones. Short racemes of small nodding yellowish flower heads may appear in summer, but the foliage is the main ornamental feature. Plants spread slowly by creeping rhizomes without becoming aggressively invasive.
Grow Nana in full sun in chalk, clay, loam, or sand that drains very freely. It suits gravel gardens, rock gardens, dry border fronts, path edges, coastal gardens, and outdoor containers. Established plants tolerate drought, dry soil, urban conditions, and some salt, but wet winter ground and humid stagnant sites encourage rot. Water during establishment, then allow the surface to dry between deep waterings. Use little fertilizer, trim faded flower stems, and divide older mounds if their centres open. Aphids, browsing, and crown rot are possible problems.
