Description
Large golden compound leaves make Aralia cordata Sun King a strong foliage anchor for shaded borders. Red-brown stems rise from a bushy clump, and a few hours of sun helps the leaves hold their yellow color through summer.
A mature plant reaches about 3 to 5 feet tall and wide, giving it enough scale for the back of a border or a large outdoor container. Airy racemes of tiny white flowers appear in summer, followed by purple-black berries in fall.
Grow it in moist but well-drained soil in partial shade, or provide consistent moisture where it receives more sun. Shelter the large leaves from strong wind, water during dry spells, and remove dead foliage after winter dieback. The berries are poisonous and should not be eaten.
