Description
Alcea rosea Nigra is a biennial or short-lived perennial with a tall columnar habit. Rounded shallowly lobed leaves form a green base, while upright racemes carry single open funnel-shaped flowers in deep chocolate-maroon tones that appear almost black.
Plant it in full sun in moderately fertile, moist but well-drained soil. Its architectural height suits the back of cottage borders, walls, fences, pollinator gardens, and coastal planting.
Mix compost into the bed before planting and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring. Water at soil level and remove dead or rust-affected foliage after flowering.
