Description
Alcea rosea Mars Magic brings a strong vertical accent to summer planting. Tall, sturdy spires carry brilliant ruby-red single flowers with warm yellow throats, opening progressively from the base upward above a mound of soft green, five-lobed foliage.
Grow this short-lived perennial in full sun and moderately fertile, well-drained soil. A position beside a wall or at the back of a border displays its height and can give the stems useful shelter; add support in exposed sites. Water regularly until established, avoid wetting the foliage, and cut back dead leaves after flowering.
Mars Magic suits cottage borders, boundary beds, pollinator gardens, and cut-flower planting. Its upright form works as an architectural marker among lower summer companions, while the clear red flowers add a vivid focal rhythm through the middle and latter part of summer.
