Description
Helictotrichon sempervirens Saphirsprudel forms a strong sapphire fountain of steel-blue blades. The arching clump keeps its color through the year and gives sunny gravel beds or flat garden edges a clear focal point. Fine flower panicles rise above the foliage in spring and summer, shifting through blue, yellow, and brown. Its tidy structure remains useful without frequent trimming.
Choose full sun and sharply drained soil to maintain the strongest blue color. Water enough to keep the ground only moderately moist and avoid heavy fertilizer or deep shade. Comb out old blades or cut the clump back in late winter or early spring. Remove old flower stems before new growth becomes strong. Divide in spring to preserve the cultivar, and prevent rust or crown rot with open spacing and good drainage.
