Description

Bearberry forms a low, spreading evergreen mat about 15 to 30 cm tall and 90 to 180 cm wide. Its trailing stems carry small glossy green leaves, white to pink urn-shaped flowers in spring, and bright red fruit from autumn into early winter. The foliage can develop red to purple tones in cold weather, while the peeling red-brown stems add close-up texture.

Plant it in full sun or partial shade on an acidic to neutral, sharply drained bank, rock garden, or sandy slope. Avoid compacting the root zone, keep the soil dry to moderately moist, and prevent persistent wetness. Avoid routine fertilizer. Its dense evergreen growth provides year-round ground cover and helps stabilize difficult slopes.
