Description
Picea abies Cupressina is a medium- to fast-growing Needled Evergreen Conifer with a typical landscape range of about 760-915 cm high and 185-245 cm wide. A strong central leader and densely arranged ascending branches form a tight Column to narrow Pyramidal crown. Short dark Green Acicular needles cover the shoots closely and take on a subtle Blue-Green cast in winter. Brownish-Orange young stems may show between the needles.
Yellowish-Brown male cones and Purple female cones appear in spring; pollinated female cones turn Green and later mature to Light-Brown pendulous seed Cones that can persist through winter. Fruit edibility, flavor, and harvest use are not documented. Grow outdoors in Full sun in deep, moist but well-drained Acid to Neutral soil. The plant is not drought tolerant, and permanently waterlogged soil inhibits growth. Its precise vertical form provides architectural structure in narrow spaces, but heavy snow or ice can force the branches apart.
