Description
Blue-green needles with silvery highlights make Pinus flexilis Vanderwolfs Pyramid a strong evergreen anchor for a front yard or property-line planting. The needles grow in twisted bundles of five, creating changing color as light moves across the tree. Its upright pyramidal crown can reach about 13 to 26 feet tall and 8 to 13 feet wide.
The controlled outline can provide screening without the broad spread of many mature pines. Plant it in full sun with a southern or western exposure and provide well-drained acid or neutral soil. Water deeply while the root system establishes, then allow extra moisture to drain away. Compost or conifer fertilizer is needed only when the soil is poor or growth is weak.
Routine pruning is unnecessary. To encourage a denser outline, shorten the new candles in mid-spring without cutting into old bare wood.
