Description
Tsuga canadensis is a graceful broadly conical evergreen conifer that grows about 40 to 80 feet tall and 13 to 25 feet wide. A drooping leader and arching lower branches create an open pyramidal outline. Slender shoots carry flat sprays of short dark green needles in two visible ranks, each with two pale bands beneath. Small pendant green cones mature to tan-brown, while older trunks develop deeply furrowed reddish-brown to purplish-gray bark.
Grow eastern hemlock in full sun, partial shade, or full shade in cool, humus-rich, moist but well-drained acidic to neutral clay, loam, or sand. Partial shade and shelter from hot afternoon sun and cold drying winds are especially useful. The tree does not tolerate drought, so water during prolonged dry periods and maintain organic mulch over the root zone. Its evergreen structure suits woodland gardens, large shade gardens, screens, hedges, wildlife plantings, and architectural sites.
Space specimen trees about 13 feet apart when allowing for the minimum mature spread. Plant in spring or fall, water well during the first year, and apply about 2 inches of organic mulch. Routine pruning is unnecessary, although plants used as formal hedges can be sheared. Propagate by seed or semi-ripe cuttings. The foliage and seeds provide cover and food for birds and small mammals. Monitor carefully for hemlock woolly adelgid, elongate hemlock scale, borers, bagworms, sawflies, spider mites, needle blight, cankers, rusts, and rots.
