Description
A dense green screen that holds its color through winter gives Thuja occidentalis Smaragd year-round structure in residential gardens. Its compact, narrow pyramidal growth forms a hedge, privacy screen, or upright architectural accent. Scale-like leaves lie in flat sprays, and small cones turn reddish brown in autumn.
Plant in full sun or partial shade in moist, well-drained soil. Shelter young plants from drying winds and water deeply and regularly during the first growing season. Apply fertilizer before new growth begins in spring. Prune only in late winter when height needs limiting.
