Description
Abies balsamea is a cold-climate North American fir with a symmetrical, narrow pyramidal crown and a slender spire. Flattened dark-green needles have pale bands beneath and release a strong balsam fragrance when crushed. Upright purple seed cones mature brown and disintegrate on the branches rather than falling intact.
Grow balsam fir in full sun or partial shade in rich, consistently moist, slightly acidic, well-drained loam or sand. It performs best where summers remain cool and air is clean. Allow generous root and crown space, maintain even moisture, and avoid hot humid sites, urban pollution, heavy clay, and prolonged drought.
