Description
Acorus calamus builds spreading clumps of upright, aromatic bright green leaves for strong vertical texture at pond margins, rain gardens, and other consistently wet sites. In late spring and summer, understated greenish to brown spadices appear beside the leaflike flowering stems.
Grow it in full sun or partial shade in clay or loam that stays saturated, or place the rhizomes in shallow water. Creeping rhizomes can establish a broad colony and help stabilize wet ground. Divide congested clumps at the start of the growing season and cut back after flowering. The plant may be toxic if eaten, so keep it away from food preparation.
